Hamilton Chairs

Hamilton Chairs

This set of 5 chairs, which was ordered by the Hamilton Estate in the first few years of the 19th century, matched a chair that was already in the collection, but with a different history of reupholstery.

My responsibilities included:

  1. Removing unoriginal, 20th century upholstery.
  2. Consolidating the frame with hide glue
  3. Taking samples for wood and finish identification
  4. Identifying the wood and finish layers under a microscope using bright field and UV fluorescence
  5. Designing and creating removable upholstery caps to allow period-appropriate upholstery to be displayed.
